چکیده

In this paper, an overview of the construction of meshfree basis functions is presented, with particular emphasis on moving least-squares approximants, natural neighbour-based polygonal interpolants, and entropy approximants. The use of information-theoretic variational principles to derive approximation schemes is a recent development. In this setting, data approximation is viewed as an inductive inference problem, with the basis functions being synonymous with a discrete probability distribution and the polynomial reproducing conditions acting as the linear constraints. The maximization (minimization) of the Shannon–Jaynes entropy functional (relative entropy functional) is used to unify the construction of globally and locally supported convex approximation schemes. A JAVA applet is used to visualize the meshfree basis functions, and comparisons and links between different meshfree approximation schemes are presented. Copyright q 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Stabilized Galerkin and Collocation Meshfree Methods

Meshfree methods have been formulated based on Galerkin type weak formulation and collocation type strong formulation. The approximation functions commonly used in the Galerkin based meshfree methods are the moving least-squares (MLS) and reproducing kernel (RK) approximations, while the radial basis functions (RBFs) are usually employed in the strong form collocation method. Galerkin type form...

Meshfree Methods

Meshfree methods are the topic of recent research in many areas of computational science and approximation theory. These methods come in various flavors, most of which can be explained either by what is known in the literature as radial basis functions (RBFs), or in terms of the moving least squares (MLS) method. Over the past several years meshfree approximation methods have found their way in...

Coupling of the meshfree and finite element methods for determination of the crack tip fields

This paper develops a new concurrent simulation technique to couple the meshfree method with the finite element method (FEM) for the analysis of crack tip fields. In the sub-domain around a crack tip, we applied a weak-form based meshfree method using the moving least squares approximation augmented with the enriched basis functions, but in the other subdomains far away from the crack tip, we e...

Meshless Methods and Partition of Unity Finite Elements

In this paper, meshless methods and partition of unity based finite element methods are reviewed. In meshless methods, the approximation is built without the explicit connectivity information between the nodes; moving-least squares approximants and natural neighbor-based interpolants are discussed. The enrichment of the finite element approximation through the partition of unity framework is de...

On the Use of Local Max-ent Shape Functions for the Simulation of Forming Processes

In this work we review the opportunities given by the use of local maximumentropy approximants (LME) for the simulation of forming processes. This approximation can be considered as a meshless approximation scheme, and thus presents some appealing features for the numerical simulation of forming processes in a Galerkin framework. Especially the behavior of these shape functions at the boundary ...
